• Don't Wait to Get the Help You Need

Most likely you’re not looking for a therapist because you feel so awesome you want to pay someone to talk about it. I know that certainly wasn’t the case for me — I first sought therapy because I was in a ton of pain (and not just the physical kind). If that sounds familiar, first off, welcome. Second, although suffering is painful, sometimes it is the only thing that can motivate us to make the positive changes necessary for true happiness.

Although it might be external circumstances that caused you to start looking for a therapist, I believe it is the internal work that sets us free. If we are waiting for people to act differently towards us, the world to be fairer, our boss to recognize our genius, etc. then we are giving away control of our happiness.

What Mr. Emerson doesn’t say is that there is a whole lot of junk that can cause disruption along the way. Have you ever set out on a journey, such as a road trip somewhere, car full of kids and everyone is super excited to be going; the GPS says it’s only going to take you a few hours to get there, the weather is nice, traffic and construction are supposed to be at a minimum? Sounds perfect, right? But instead of having a nice smooth road ahead, you encounter hills and valleys, twists and turns, potholes, traffic, missed exits and countless other disruptions. By the time you’ve gotten to your destination everyone is tired, hungry, cranky, (hangry) and no one is having fun.

Some people can encounter these road trip disruptions and navigate them effortlessly. Others, however, have a more difficult time and their internal GPS is stuck on the “rerouting” screen.
